Opels new billboard advertisement on the Johannesburg N1 has been catching the attention of commuters driving by. Little do they know however that the advert is in fact a projection onto a billboard, something that has never been done before, and “could only be made possible with technology provided by Panasonic”.
The billboard stands 18 meters from the ground, with the projector another 1.6 meters above that and 5,77 meters outwards on the arm that holds it in place. This ground breaking technology can be linked to a network and includes a live feed, social media and more. As the projector light moves away from the eye and bounces back, it is unobtrusive to the driver. The projector provides a sharp, high definition image that looks like a flat screen TV to the passerby and creates a new advertising experience for brands.
In order to ensure continuous functioning, the four-lamp system of the projector allows it to keep working even if a lamp fails. The UPS system that it is connected to allows power to continue even during loadshedding. So the billboard casts high definition, sharp and lifelike images 24/7.

The project itself was pulled together by talented teams from Applix, Continental, AdMaker, Facet-Nation and Pansolutions. The Panasonic PT-DZ21K projector provides splendid images from a compact body. The projector has 20 000lm of brightness coupled with Panasonics unique quad-lamp system as well as a Dynamic Iris that uses a scene-linking aperture mechanism to achieve remarkable 10 000:1 contrast without lowering its high brightness. This helps to produce deeper, richer blacks and provides images with more detailed textures. Says Dustin Claasens of Applix: “This series is compatible with both passive and active 3D projection systems. It combines with either a separate external 100/120/144Hz drive with IR emitter and active shutter glasses, or an active filter and passive glasses, for viewing 3D images. The PT-DZ21K Series projectors lower the total cost of ownership because they have a lamp replacement cycle of up to 2000 hours. Their environmentally friendly design also includes a low power consumption of 2300W”.
